From the Desk of the Dean of Students

Greetings Huskie,

As your Dean of Students, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the situation that occurred in the DeKalb community this past Saturday during the arrest of an Aurora man by DeKalb Police that was captured on video.  While this event did not happen on our campus, involve our NIU Police Department or a member of the NIU community, the situation is certainly concerning and hits close to home.

At NIU, we are committed to cultivating equity, building an inclusive community, and promoting education, awareness and action. Our long-term community partner,
New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, will open its doors to anyone who would like the opportunity to engage in discussion with representatives from DeKalb Police and the DeKalb County Sherriff’s Department on Wednesday, September 4 at 7 p.m.

Additionally, we encourage you as students to reach out to your peers, faculty and staff, seek support from one of the many
cultural and counseling resources available to you as a Huskie. Know that your safety is our priority and that you are a part of a community who cares about each of you.

It is my hope that through honest dialogue and a continued commitment to our values and the principles of the
Northern Pact, that each of us will use our voices create to positive change.

Forward Together,

Kelly Wesener Michael, Ed.D.
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs
Chief Student Affairs Officer & Dean of Students
