NIU Well-Being Tip: The Power of Gratitude
by Counseling and Consultation Services, Employee Assistance Program and RecWell.

This week’s well-being tip might sound strange at first. Given all that has happened over the past five months, the topic of gratitude and being thankful can sound contradictory. Even if you have experienced more significant challenges, you may have found yourself feeling grateful for certain things. If you haven’t experienced many challenges, you may have felt guilty for what you have or what others have had to go through. Regardless of what you have or have not experienced, the power of gratitude has been shown to have many benefits.

According to Psychology Today, being grateful is a way of looking at things in our daily life, a feeling we have about what we truly appreciate and actions we take to remind ourselves about what really matters. When we practice gratitude and spend time reflecting on what we’re thankful for we are more likely to maintain a healthy perspective and decrease negative thinking and feelings. We are also less likely to compare ourselves to others and more likely to focus on what we are grateful for in our own lives.

Research on gratitude has shown how this perspective can improve our mental, emotional, and physical health. People who are more grateful are less depressed, have healthier relationships, sleep better, experience less stress and have higher physical activity and energy levels. Like all well-being and wellness approaches, fostering gratitude is something you can develop as part of your usual routine.

Here are some simple ways you can incorporate the power of gratitude in your life:

Keep a gratitude journal and add to it everyday.

Tell someone you love them and/or how much you appreciate them.

Notice the beauty in nature each day (even bad weather has its own beauty and purpose).

Nurture the friendships you have.

Focus on using positive language to highlight what you’re thankful for and be aware of times you use negative language (and why).

Go on a walk (or do another physical activity) to intentionally think about the things for which you are grateful.

Featured Key Moment
The NIU Steelband is formed (1973)
When Al O’Connor was a graduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he got the chance to play around with an instrument unlike any he’d ever seen before. Made out of a 50-gallon steel oil drum, it had indentations hammered into the inverted bottom that formed notes when struck with a special hammer. It was a steelpan, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. Learn more about the history of the NIU Steelband >
