Updated guidance for Phase 5 of Restore Illinois
On Friday, the state of Illinois entered into Phase 5 of its Restore Illinois plan after a consistent decline in COVID-19 cases. All sectors of the economy are now fully open and can resume at regular capacities including retail, dining, large events and venues.

Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset workshop
NIU’s Fidelity Investments representative, Nicholas Camarella, Retirement Planner, will be hosting a virtual workshop on the Social Security Windfall Elimination Provision on June 23, 2021 at noon. To attend the virtual presentation, please register online. Questions should be directed to HumanResources@niu.edu.

Internal candidates sought for Interim Ombudsperson
NIU Ombudsperson Sarah Klaper is departing NIU in July to pursue another opportunity. We are grateful for her service and wish her the best as she transitions to her new role this summer.

Given the importance of this position to our campus, an internal candidate is being sought to serve as interim ombudsperson from July 1, 2021 until the start date of a permanent hire. The job description and application instructions are available on the Human Resource Services website. Applications are due to Human Resource Services by Wednesday, June 16, 2021.

A search for our permanent ombudsperson will commence in early fall 2021.


Parking lot repairs to begin Monday, June 14, 2021
Lot P located west of Stevenson Towers will be closed from Monday, June 14 through Tuesday, June 15 for maintenance and lot repairs. The lot is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday June 16, 2021. In addition, construction will begin on Stevenson Towers, which may impact parking in surrounding lots. Blue, orange and yellow permit holders can park in lot PS during this time, which is located south of Lot P.

Lots S/38 located south of the Child Care Center will be closed from Wednesday, June 16 through Friday, June 18 for maintenance and lot repairs. The lot is scheduled to reopen on Monday, June 21, 2021. Yellow and blue permit holders can park in nearby lots 20, C, K, or L. Individuals who need to pick up and drop off their children at the Child Care Center should use lot 16 which is to the east of the building.

Lot maintenance and repairs are weather permitting, and may fluctuate if there are adverse weather conditions. For more information, contact Campus Parking Services at (815) 753-1045 or parking@niu.edu.

University conference and event services to resume
The state of Illinois has entered Phase 5 of Restore Illinois. This means our Conference and Event Services team is now accepting meeting and special event reservations without any capacity restrictions on campus at Altgeld Hall and the Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center (BAVC), and off campus at our Naperville and Rockford locations. All our venues offer flexible meeting and special event rooms with audiovisual capabilities, full-service catering and our experienced team, ready to help you navigate all the details of your next meeting or special occasion.

As a reminder, a room rental discount of 10% is offered to all NIU faculty, staff, students and alumni for personal events held in Altgeld Hall and BAVC, in addition to 2021 wedding ceremony and/or reception specials at those same locations.

Professor Purush Damodaran named Interim Dean of Graduate School and Associate Vice President for International Affairs
Professor Purush Damodaran has accepted the position of Interim Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Vice President for International Affairs.

Professor Damodaran has served as chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology since 2012 and brings expertise in both the graduate and international affairs arenas. He has served as graduate program director in his department and has extensive experience in recruiting and supporting graduate and international students.

He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2018 Outstanding Department Contribution to International Education Award, the 2020 International Educator of the Year Award and the 2021 Presidential Teaching Professorship Award. He has shown his commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion through his service on NIU’s faculty diversity recruitment and retention committee and his service in advising student leaders in the NIU chapters of the Society for Women Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers.

Professor Damodaran received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M University, a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from NIU, and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Madras in India. 

 

Pending approval by the NIU Board of Trustees, he will begin this new role on July 1, 2021.

FY2021 Accounting Office deadlines
We’re preparing to wrap up another fiscal year here at NIU and it’s important that we finalize the university’s FY21 financial statements in a timely manner. Please ensure that all FY21 transactions for your department are properly classified and submitted to the Accounting Office by the deadlines listed below:

All FY2021 invoices, payment authorizations, check requests and travel reimbursement requests due to Accounts Payable Services at AccountsPayableSrvs@niu.edu or Lowden Hall 208.

Year-end cutoff for posting all journal activity occurring in June from all fund sources due to General Ledger at JournalEntries@niu.edu.

All FY2021 cash and/or checks received must be deposited at the Bursar’s Office in Swen Parson 235, and must be made in accordance with Bursar’s Office policy.

It’s very important to note that transactions required to be processed in FY21 must be received by the requested due dates (do not hold FY21 documents even if the deadline has passed).

Banks, Erickson encourage Huskies to give during Huskies United
Raymond Banks, M.S. ’86, says when he and his husband, Dr. Eric Erickson, attended college, they each received a helping hand in the form of financial assistance, which allowed them to pursue advanced degrees and gave them greater opportunities.
