| | Resources for Teaching Remotely | Teaching Tip of the Week The Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning (CITL) helps faculty explore and evaluate innovative ways to use learning technologies for teaching at NIU. These learning technologies include recommended and institutionally supported software and web tools to promote collaboration, enhance communication, share multimedia, teach online and more. In addition to supporting established learning technologies like Blackboard, CITL also works with faculty and administrators to pilot new tools.

| Notices Provide Your Feedback on LMS Review Demonstrations The open demonstrations for the learning management system review have ended, but you can still provide feedback. Input from the campus community is a critical component in the scoring that will determine which system will best meet our needs going forward.
All faculty, instructors, staff and students are encouraged to view the recordings for the demonstrations and submit feedback at our site. The anonymous surveys will remain open through Friday, March 26.
The NIU OneCard is Getting a Facelift
Faculty, staff and students are invited to vote for their favorite of three proposed new designs for the NIU OneCard. Voting is open until Friday, March 26, 2021.
BOT Approves Student Health Insurance Plan for 2021-2022 The NIU Board of Trustees voted in its quarterly meeting Thursday, March 18 to approve the 2021-2022 school year’s Student Health Insurance (SHI) plan.
Plan details are available online now to help students plan for the fall 2021, spring 2022 and summer 2022 semesters. Huskies taking nine or more on-campus course credit hours in DeKalb will be enrolled automatically, but can waive SHI if they have alternative coverage.

Information Security Warns of Ransomware Recent reporting has indicated an increase in ransomware targeting higher education institutions and k-12 schools in at least 12 states. The reported attacks include phishing attempts and network compromises of vulnerable internet facing services.
NIU has been seeing an uptick in malware detection and phishing activity. All students, faculty and staff must use utmost caution when handling email and should treat all email as if it is potentially malicious. If you are the recipient of a phishing attempt or suspicious email, forward the suspicious communication as an attachment to abuse@niu.edu.
Presidential Commissions Accepting Membership Nominations The Office of the President invites nominations of faculty, staff and students for appointment to the presidential commissions for terms to begin in fall 2021. Self-nominations are welcome.

Financial Month End Close The month of March is closing for all financial reporting activity at noon Friday, April 9, 2021. Journals not posted at that time will go into April business. Submit March journals before end of business Thursday, April 8. Final March reports are scheduled to be available Monday, April 12, 2021. In addition, April reports are scheduled to be available Tuesday, April 13, 2021. | Huskie Pride Lights initiative announced Celebrating the accomplishments of our fellow Huskies is an important part of the NIU experience and one of the most visible is the relatively new tradition of lighting the tower on the Holmes Student Center red to acknowledge a special achievement or day. It’s a stirring symbol that can be seen for miles in every direction, but it also comes with challenges. How best to determine when to light it up, and how to communicate what is being commemorated? | Huskies help Huskies through Student-Faculty Links mentorship program Hollie Rodriguez knows the important role a mentor can play in a student’s educational experience. “I had a handful of informal mentors from all over campus,” said Rodriguez, who graduated from NIU in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in English. “Mentors in Career Services, from my major program, and even my work-study job made a huge difference in my experience at NIU.” Read more. |
