Dear Huskies,

In follow-up to the community awareness message this morning, I wanted to share some further information.

Yesterday, the NIU Police were made aware that a student was displaying concerning behavior on social media, and there was fear the student might potentially do harm to themselves or our community. NIU immediately followed up with the student, made a full assessment of the situation, and determined there was not a threat. Please know that if a threat were present, the campus would have been immediately notified and instructed on safety measures.

Understandably, we live in a time when violence on school campuses is a reality. We also know that social media posts can be interpreted in a variety of ways, have an unintended impact and can fuel rumors and accusations.

In this or any other situation, should you or a friend be going through a difficult time, we have a variety of experienced teams in place that want to support you, including our Counseling and Consultation Services, Cultural Centers and Military and Post-Traditional Student Services.

As always, I encourage you to go to class, ask for help when needed and be supportive of one another. Please also reach out to the NIU Police or the Dean of Students Office should you have concerns or questions.

Forward Together,

Kelly Wesener Michael, Ed.D.
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs
Chief Student Affairs Officer & Dean of Students
