Resources for Teaching Remotely

Teaching Tip of the Week
Send out homework due date reminders for each assignment by using Blackboard announcements, email or Teams. Students appreciate these reminders and it helps them stay on track. Also encourage your students to ask questions. Use opportunities like office hours and breakout groups (on ZoomTeams, or Collaborate, for example) to encourage discussion among peers. You can also utilize discussion forums to solicit questions from your students. All students can benefit from a question asked from one student. Allow students to share reflections on their learning.

New Account ID Look-up Tool for NIU Students

The Division of Information Technology has launched a new self-service feature that will grant NIU applicants and newly enrolled students the ability to recover their Z-ID at any time, without the need for additional intervention.

During the initial application and onboarding process, first-time applicants receive an email with information about their newly created NIU account-ID and password reset instructions. The information and instructions outlined in this letter are essential for the students’ ability to access their account to complete registration and enrollment activities.

However, due to students Z-ID being permanent, for students who have previously applied to NIU for admissions, subsequent requests for admissions to NIU will not trigger a second letter. Additionally, new applicants often report not being able to locate the letter in their email.

Find My Account-ID was developed to help address both the process gap and message recovery problem for students that results in delays for students’ registration and generates hundreds of support requests to the IT Service Desk every semester.

Find My Account-ID will allow students to enter the email address they used to apply for admissions to NIU. If the email entered can be matched to a MyNIU account, a message will be sent to the alternate (non-NIU) email address with the student’s permanent Z-ID, along with the initial password configuration needed to reset their password and securely register their NIU account.

The Find My Account-ID look-up tool can be found on the password.niu.edu site with other NIU account activation and reset options, including Register Your Account and Change Your Password.

Featured Key Moment
First endowed professorship created (1995)
Among Northern’s earliest graduates were a couple named Ruth Gordon and LD Morgridge. She was from Oak Park, he was from Amboy, and they both worked on the  student newspaper and were active in the hiking club. After they graduated in 1915, Ruth and LD were married, and went on to careers in education: she taught in Sterling, Illinois, while he became principal of nearby Dixon High School.
