Eaton-Miner Scholarship for Physics Teaching Majors

The Eaton-Miner fund is a fund administered by the NIU Alumni Foundation which honors the memory of two former faculty members of the NIU Physics Department. This fund makes possible the scholarships which are described below. For further information regarding the fund please contact Jon Miller, coordinator for secondary science education.

The Department of Physics is pleased to announce that it will be awarding two scholarships. Each will provide money to help defray the cost of books, tuition, and other educational expenses. Students pursuing initial teacher certification in physics are eligible for these awards. Students should apply in writing to Carol Thompson in the Physics Department if they are interested. Students must be in good standing in the University, have made demonstrable progress in the Educator Licensure Program, exhibit the dispositions appropriate to a teacher and to the faculty members for whom the award is named, and be making good progress in their overall program at the University. Each student that applies is asked to submit a brief essay of approximately two typewritten pages. The topic of this essay will be will be "The Individual or Individuals Who Most Inspired My Interest in Pursuing a Career in Science Teaching", if the student is in the first year of certification, or "the philosophy of teaching science I have developed" if the student is in the second year of certification.  The deadline for application and submission of the essay is October 31st, 2012.  Decisions regarding the awards of the scholarships will be announced at the beginning of November. Criteria for the awards will include performance in Physics courses and other courses in the Physics Teacher Certification program, student dispositions, and the quality of the submitted essay. Awards will be made without regard to race, gender, or ethnic background.
