How to Apply

Your Program, Your Path

We recognize that the pathways our students take to becoming professional educators at NIU are as unique as the individuals themselves.

Whether you are a current NIU undergraduate student, a transfer student, post-graduate student or someone seeking a master's degree, we can help you reach your goal of becoming a secondary science educator.

Step 1: Consult our advising documents

Before applying, please read about the licensure program you are interested in and make sure you meet the minimum requirements for admission.

If you meet these requirements, you should contact Paul Fix the Assistant Director of Secondary Science Licensure or Director of the Discipline in which you are interested and we will assist you with the next steps in the application process.

Step 2: Complete application and compile necessary information

Application Deadline: March 1st. Applications submitted after March 1st may be considered based on clinical placement availability.

New cohorts are accepted in the spring semester and begin their coursework in the fall each year.

All of the following forms and information must be included for an application to be complete:

  • Program Application Packet. In this packet, you will find more information on how to apply to the secondary science educator licensure program. The packet includes a program application, a self-evaluation/essay and two clinical forms.
  • Two letters of recommendation forms. Give two people familiar with your skills and personality a copy of this form and have them send it directly to NIU. Additional details may be found in the Program Application Packet.
  • A copy of transcripts from all prior attended institutions is necessary. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable at this time.

Step 3: Send in completed program application

All completed forms, accompanying letters of recommendation and transcripts should be sent or emailed to:

Paul Fix
Faraday Hall 326
Northern Illinois University
DeKalb, IL 60115

Once your application and supporting materials are received, we will notify you by letter shortly after the March 31st deadline. Applications for the May 30th deadline will be approved on a case-by-case basis depending on available space in the program.

Step 4: (For non-NIU students) Apply to NIU

If you are current NIU student, we will personally work with you to register for the correct fall licensure classes.

If you are NOT a current NIU student, you will need to apply to the university before you can register for classes. Please keep in contact with program advisors through this process.

Information on whether to enroll as a post-graduate, student-at-large, or graduate student can be found on the licensure advising docs or in the FAQs .
