Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up?

When you select a room, you'll be given the option of selecting one of these plans.

How and when do I pay for a meal plan?

Your meal plan will be billed to your NIU Bursar's account, as it is included in your room and board rate. See due dates.

How can I change my meal plan if I already signed up?

Changing from one meal plan to another is no longer automatic and must be requested and processed on a case-by-case basis. Downgrading from one plan to another is no longer available, but upgrading to a Block Plan is still possible. The option to add Flex Dollars is available all semester long. Submit a Meal Plan Change Request.

Deadlines for requesting changes:

  • If you added your meal plan before the semester started, you have ten business days from the start of the semester to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your meal plan. After those ten business days, you can still upgrade or refill, but you can't cancel or downgrade your plan.
  • If you added your meal plan on or after the first day of the semester, you have ten business days from the date you added your plan to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel it. After those ten business days, you can still upgrade or refill, but you can't cancel or downgrade your plan.

How many Flex Dollars do I need?

It depends on where you would like to eat on campus and how often you eat. Answer a few questions and we can help make a recommendation.

What plan should I get if I live in Stevenson?

We think the Huskie Block Plan is perfect for Stevenson residents. You can use the plan's weekly meals and Flex Dollars to eat at the food court in Stevenson.

What is the To-Go meal program?

A new program for any student on a Huskie Block Plan to fill an eco-friendly, sturdy, reusable container and take their food to-go.

Take To-Go from Gilbert, Neptune, and New Hall.

Return dirty but empty container and receive a new, clean container or key tag for the next time you wish to take To-Go.

One-time fee of $4 the first time you wish to take to-go. Lost containers or key tags will result in another $4 charge.

When do unused meals or Flex Dollars expire?

In the Huskie Block Plan, unused meals expire at the end of the week, and unused Flex Dollars roll over up to two weeks in value.

In the Huskie Classic Plan, Flex Dollars are not part of the meal plan. If you have a Huskie Classic Plan and wish to add Flex Dollars to combine with your meal plan, select on of the Flex Level Plans available to you.

With the Flex Level 1 through 4 Plans, any unused Flex Dollars expire at the end of the academic year, ending with the spring semester.

What are Huskie Bucks, and do I need them?

Huskie Bucks are another way to pay for meals but are not part of a meal plan. Huskie Bucks are also used for laundry services and printing/copying on campus. You can deposit funds into your Huskie Bucks account at any time. Learn more about Huskie Bucks.
