Meal Plans for Residents

When you live on campus, you don't have to worry about buying groceries. Included in your room and board rate is the Huskie Block 12 meal plan with 12 meals per week and 100 Dining Dollars for additional meals throughout the semester. This meal plan lets you choose from a variety of locations across campus. For an additional cost, you can select a larger plan. Dining Dollars can be added to any meal plan.
Resident students are only provided access to dining rooms in other residence halls when dining is open. For example, If you reside in Grant, you are provided access to New Hall during hours of operation.

How do I sign up?
When you select a room, you'll be given the option of selecting one of these plans.
How and when do I pay for a meal plan?
Your meal plan will be billed to your NIU Bursar's account, as it is included in your room and board rate. See due dates.
How can I change my meal plan if I already signed up?
You can change your plan by sending an email from your student Z-ID email account to housing@niu.edu and dining@niu.edu.
Deadlines for requesting changes:
- If you added your meal plan before the semester started, you have ten business days from the start of the semester to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your meal plan. After those ten business days, you can still upgrade or refill, but you can't cancel or downgrade your plan.
- If you added your meal plan on or after the first day of the semester, you have ten business days from the date you added your plan to upgrade, downgrade, or cancel it. After those ten business days, you can still upgrade or refill, but you can't cancel or downgrade your plan.
What is Meal Exchange?
Meal Exchange offers the ability for Huskie Block plans to choose dining options from a retail dining center. In locations like Stevenson Retail Dining use one of your meal swipes for a combination of items like a sandwich, chips, and a drink. Locations offering meal exchange will list what items are eligible to be combined for one meal swipe. This option has been expanded for the Spring 2021 semester to include the Depot C-Store, the Grill at Huskie Den, Caribou Coffee & Einstein Bros. Bagels, and QDOBA.
What is the To-Go meal program?
For the Spring 2021 semester, all meals in Neptune and New Hall Dining will be packaged to-go.
All students with a meal plan are eligible to use the To-Go program key tags and exchange in unit for the reusable container. Those students that do not use a key tag will receive disposable containers.
When do unused meals or Dining Dollars expire?
With the Huskie Block Plans , unused meals expire at the end of the week, and unused Dining Dollars expire at the end of the semester. Weekly meal resets occur 12:00 am every Sunday morning/Saturday night.
With the Dining Dollar Level plans, any unused Dining Dollars expire at the end of the academic year.
What are Huskie Bucks, and do I need them?
Huskie Bucks are another way to pay for meals but are not part of a meal plan. Huskie Bucks are also used for laundry services and printing/copying on campus. You can deposit funds into your Huskie Bucks account at any time. Learn more about Huskie Bucks.

If you want to eat at other locations near your classes, you can add 110, 220, 330 or 450 Flex Dollars to your that expire at the end of the academic year, or you can upgrade to a Huskie Block Plan that includes a weekly 20, 30 or 40 Flex Dollar allowance that rolls over up to two weeks in value.
