Beyond the Book

The Common Reading Experience is all about learning to understand other points of view while building a sense of community. You'll have opportunities to apply what you learn throughout your time at NIU. We encourage you to learn more about the following programs, which can help you appreciate different perspectives:

  • Study Abroad: Expand your horizons by studying abroad. We have programs in more than 80 countries.
  • Huskie Alternative Breaks: These group service trips allow you to make a difference as you learn about a social issue.
  • Beloved Community: These gatherings give local residents and members of the NIU community the opportunity to come together and find solutions to difficult topics.
  • Research Rookies: This program allows you to connect with fellow Huskies while researching a topic that interests you.

To learn about more ways to get involved, visit the Office of Student Engagement and Experiential Learning. The Office of Academic Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is another great resource for learning about programs and services related to diversity.
