Welcome from Acting Dean Judy Ledgerwood
Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences! With 18 departments, five interdisciplinary academic centers and three research centers, we are the largest and most diverse of NIU’s colleges. We are unique in the fact that we touch almost every student in the University though general education courses, majors, minors or certificates. We provide students with degrees as well as a solid foundation in the liberal arts.
We embrace a commitment to teaching, learning, research and service. That commitment can be found throughout our college – in classrooms, laboratories, field schools and in daily interactions between students, faculty and staff. We are “just the right size” – large enough to be a Carnegie Tier II Research University but small enough that students interact directly with nationally and internationally renowned faculty.
We move students from the classroom to careers. Employers are looking for graduates who can think critically and write well; they want culturally competent and flexible innovators who have had hands-on experience in their fields. That is what our college provides -- the solid foundation of knowledge, theory and research wedded with the engaged learning experiences beyond the classroom that prepare students for success.
