B.S. in Mechatronics Engineering

Technologies such as artificial intelligence and cloud systems are rapidly evolving. There is a strong demand for engineers who can harness these technologies to develop smart machines. As a mechatronics engineering major, you'll learn to design the systems and software needed for such machines.

Your coursework will combine electrical, mechanical and control engineering. You'll apply what you've learned in our extensive laboratories. When you graduate, you'll be ready to begin a career developing products or performing research. You'll be in demand by a range of industries, such as:

  • Robotics
  • Manufacturing
  • Consumer products
  • Aerospace

Your major requirements will include a range of engineering classes. You'll also take courses in math, physics and other areas.

Our distinguished mechanical engineering faculty have many areas of expertise, including:

  • Assistive robotics
  • Swarm technology
  • Artificial intelligence

Hands-on Learning

Your first-year experience at NIU will be full of ways to get involved on campus. You'll also take UEET 101, Introduction to Engineering. The class will introduce you to engineering principles and emphasizes hands-on learning.

You'll have many opportunities to apply your knowledge outside the classroom, including:

Student Resources

We'll give you the information and support you need to succeed on campus and after graduation. Some of the student resources you can take advantage of include:
