Engineers in Residence

Engineers in Residence was developed to bridge theory with practice and graduate experienced engineers from our programs. Through this program, our faculty and graduate students partner with local industries, solving real-life problems and helping them to remain competitive and successful in the global marketplace.

Our graduate students have the opportunity to practice their technical skills in the real world and understand how theory can be applied to solve critical problems. Our industry partners benefit from the students' work, improving their productivity, customer satisfaction, cost savings and more.

How It Works

  • Identify your need and how the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology can help
  • Choose your team of faculty and students
  • Place student(s) onsite for the contracted number of hours each week. Selected graduate students receive funding, including tuition and a stipend.
  • Project teams always include a faculty coach and a company supervisor to ensure success
  • NIU experts will help you identify needs outside of engineering and engineering technology; it is common for the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology to elicit the support of other NIU colleges to ensure the success of the project.
