Effective July 1, 2026, NIU updated travel guidelines for fiscal year 2027 (FY27) to apply to all university-funded travel. As a reminder, university-funded travel should have a clear and demonstrable connection to institutional priorities, operational needs, student success, research, compliance obligations, revenue generation or external engagement. Travel will only be approved when its anticipated benefits justify the associated costs and when the objectives cannot be achieved through lower-cost alternatives, including virtual participation.
The updated travel guidelines are available online at https://www.niu.edu/budget/planning/travel.shtml.
All other guidelines regarding personnel, purchasing promotional items and catering remain in effect for the fiscal year.
Thoughtful stewardship of university resources is a shared responsibility and remains essential to advancing NIU’s mission and goals. We greatly appreciate your continued commitment to making prudent, mission-focused decisions to ensure that our resources are directed to where they will have the greatest impact on our students, faculty, staff and the communities we serve.
