SafeAssign Outage on April 2, 2018
Posted: 3/5/18; Updated 3/23/18
Blackboard SafeAssign, a plagiarism prevention tool that detects potentially unoriginal content in students' papers, will be unavailable on April 2, 2018, from 2:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., CDT. During this time, any files students submit to an Assignment with SafeAssign enabled will not be processed by SafeAssign, and will not generate an originality score or report. The submissions will be available as usual for grading, however, and no student submissions will be lost due to the outage.
Once SafeAssign has become available again, faculty can download student submissions that occurred during the outage and submit them manually for SafeAssign review using the Direct Submit feature.
Blackboard scheduled this maintenance outage in order to migrate SafeAssign to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) hosting platform. Because AWS provides highly reliable and scalable hosting, this move should reduce or eliminate future performance issues for SafeAssign, like exceptionally long processing times or minor outages. Blackboard utilized analytics data on SafeAssign usage across institutions to select a maintenance window that should affect the fewest users.
