Affirmative Action Overview

NIU is dedicated to affirmative action. We recognize that people have historically encountered barriers to employment because of their race, sex or other characteristics. It's important that we take steps to address these patterns of discrimination.

Our office guides university practices to align with laws and policies that ban the consideration of factors unrelated to an applicant's professional qualifications. The strategies we employ encourage diverse pools of qualified candidates and promote affirmative action throughout the search process.

We're responsible for developing and implementing NIU's affirmative action plan. Our duties also include:

  • Establishing procedures and monitoring decisions related to employee recruitment and the search process.
  • Providing information and training to the university community on affirmative action.
  • Working with external agencies and community organizations to support underrepresented job seekers.
