Title IX Coordinator

Title IX is a federal civil right that prohibits discrimination in educational institutions based on a person’s gender. You often hear about Title IX in regards to athletics, but the truth is that Title IX protects any person in an institution of higher education from being discriminated against based on their gender.

 Title IX discrimination includes:

  • Discrimination in sports based on gender
  • Sexual harassment
  • Discrimination of women in STEM programs
  • Pregnant students
  • Students with children
  • Sexual violence or assault
  • Any gender-based discrimination

View the Title IX/Sexual Misconduct Policy and Complaint Procedures for Employees and Students. If you want to report a crime that does not fall into this list, report it to the Police Department.

NIU does not tolerate gender-based discrimination. If you feel that you have been a victim of discrimination based on your gender, a thorough investigation will be conducted. Several crimes can be classified as a Title IX violation and NIU Police work with Title IX investigators.

If any misconduct has occurred, NIU will take steps to stop the sex-based misconduct, remedy the situation and prevent any further recurrence from happening.

If you feel the incident is only a Title IX violation (not a crime), contact the following staff members with questions or concerns regarding Title IX compliance.
