Graduate Residence Hall Director

The Graduate Residence Hall Director provides primary leadership and overall management of a residence hall housing approximately 300-500 students. The Graduate Residence Hall Director is directly supervised by a Residence Hall Director or Complex Coordinator. This is a live-in position which involves a level of accessibility and accountability to all students and staff members. The Graduate Residence Hall Director is responsible for fostering a responsible, inclusive community; providing intentional, development-based supervision; utilizing sound fiscal management and business practices; as well as ensuring a safe, comfortable living environment for students through use of a Residential Curriculum model. In some complexes, the Graduate Hall Director may also work closely with Faculty Advisors and House Coordinators who provide leadership and support the Living Learning Communities. All residential communities support and contribute to the academic mission of the institution.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Advising:
    1. Counsel, advise, and refer residents on personal and academic matters
    2. Co-advise hall council
  2. Leadership:
    1. Create intentional efforts to interact with students and provide opportunities for student growth and development using the Residential Curriculum
    2. Support the mission, policies, and procedures of the department and university
    3. Promote and develop an inclusive and academically supportive community
    4. Assist with departmental initiatives as needed
  3. Collaboration:
    1. Actively participate as a member of the area team, along with additional Graduate Residence Hall Directors, Residence Hall Directors, Complex Coordinators, Chief Clerks, Community Police Officers, Faculty Coordinators, Campus Dining Services Staff, and Facilities Staff
    2. Seek opportunities to work collaboratively with departmental, divisional, and campus partners through committees, liaison relationships, and other interactions
    3. Collaborate directly with Faculty Advisors and House Coordinators for the Living Learning Communities housed in the residence halls, as appropriate
    4. Collaborate with other staff within the complex and across Housing and Residential Services to ensure consistency and sharing of best practices
    5. Assist with summer conference operations
    6. Assist with the management of hall facilities, budget
    7. Work collaboratively with the Chief Clerk to manage building occupancy
  4. Supervision:
    1. Supervise 5-10 Community Advisors
    2. Assist with the selection, training, development, and evaluation of student staff
    3. Establish and maintain regularly scheduled office hours
  5. Crisis Management and Adjudication:
    1. Adjudicate low level violations of University and Housing and Residential Services policies
    2. Respond to crisis and emergency situations and communicate necessary information appropriately
    3. Participate in area on-call duty rotation including weeknights, weekends, and break periods when the university may be closed
    4. Serves as a Campus Security Authority and must report security issues to appropriate university official.
  6. Programming Development/Planning:
    1. Assist staff members in assessing student needs and providing strategies through use of the Residential Curriculum to effectively meet those needs

Position Requirements

  • Admitted to Northern Illinois University graduate school and enrolled in a graduate course of study
  • Preference will be given to graduate students pursuing a degree in Counseling, Adult and Higher Education, but those pursuing degrees in a closely related field or discipline at Northern Illinois University will also be considered


  • Experience working with students of diverse educational, racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Previous residence life experience or group living experience


A 10 month, 20 hours per week position includes:
  • Start Date: July 15, 2016
  • Salary: $1,000 per month
  • Housing in residence hall: Furnished 1 bedroom, 1 bath apartment with local phone, cable services, and high-speed Internet
  • Meal Plan, when Campus Dining Services locations are in operation
  • Other Benefits: Tuition waiver, professional development funds and reserved parking at a reduced rate
