Information for Prospective Students

Electrical engineering creates innovative ways to improve people’s lives through the theory, design, development and application of systems and devices that generate and use electrical energy. Since almost everything in today’s world runs on electricity, electrical engineering programs produce the most engineers.

The electrical engineering curriculum at NIU equips you with the skills to develop, design and operate electrical systems including machinery, electronics, communications and computers.

Points of Pride

  • Faculty are performing active research on projects with applications in such wide-ranging fields as wireless communications, automated sensors, microelectronics and alternative energy
  • Classes are taught by faculty, not grad students, and students have direct contact with their professors
  • A hands-on approach that puts students in one of the department's many labs to focus on developing practical skills
