PHYS 477/577 - Astrophysics





Introduction to the principles of astrophysics. Application of mechanics, gravity, relativity, electromagnetic radiation, nuclear physics, and thermodynamics to astronomical objects. Typical topics include celestial mechanics, the formation and composition of stars and planets, black holes, the structure of galaxies, and cosmology.

This course includes two lectures per week.

The first two weeks will review some basic physics applied to astronomy. After that the course will be divided into three topical areas:

  1. Telescopes and measurement techniques
  2. Gravity, relativity, black holes, and their origin
  3. Galaxies, cosmology, and the universe
