The Women’s Rights Alliance (WRA) of Northern Illinois University is open to all students and is dedicated to the fulfillment of its mission through quality programs that serve the NIU and DeKalb communities. Our focus is on the status and wellbeing of women and girls, and we are equally focused on improving relations between the sexes. In this way, we contribute to the ongoing effort of society to build a more equitable and civil world for all people. It is our vision that Northern Illinois University, with the aid of our organization, continue to develop as an outstanding leader in the preservation and improvement of women’s rights and safety.
*The WRA is sponsored by the NIU Women's Studies Program
Events and activities of the Women's Rights Alliance have included performances of Eve Ensler's A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and A Prayer and her Vagina Monologues; an educational workshop called "The Vagina Seminar;" NIU's annual Take Back the Night March; ,movie screenings and discussions; letter writing campaigns; and fundraisers.
The Women's Rights Alliance was founded in 1989 as the Women's Alliance and received Student Association recognition in March of that year. In 2006, the group changed its name to the Women's Rights Alliance, in order to encourage more diverse membership.
