African American Women Writing Their Stories

NIU Women’s Studies Program Director Amy Levin leads an informal discussion of inspiring and unusual autobiographical narratives by African-American women. Sponsors: Women’s Studies Program and Center for Black Studies.

Wednesday, February 29

“Made in Dagenham” Film Screening & Discussion
7:00 p.m., Reavis Hall, Room 211

Join us for a screening of this thought-provoking and humorous movie about the 1968 women machinists strike at the Ford plant in Dagenham, England, which led to the passing of an Equal Pay Act. Sandra Dawson, author of Holiday Camps in 20th Century Britain: Packaging Pleasure, will lead a discussion related to the film’s themes. Sponsor: Women’s Studies Program.

"This is What a Feminist Looks Like" Sticker Day!
All Day, Everywhere

On Sticker Day, we hope to break harmful stereotypes that cast all feminists as white, female, middle-class, or politically radical, and to open up the definitions of the word “feminist” to more complicated meanings. Dr. Susie Porter, Associate Professor of History and Director of Gender Studies at the University of Utah, traces an unexpected source of modern Mexican women’s empowerment to shifts in women’s education, workforce participation, and the expansion of spaces of women’s culture. Of Workers, Señoritas, and Secretaries: Women, Office Work, and Class Identity in Mexico City, 1890-1920

Dr. Susie Porter discusses recent trends in Mexican historiography of women and labor to advance our understanding of the entrance of middle-class women into the labor force in turn-of-the-century Mexico City. She then examines women’s entrance into office work and the multiple ways class identities adhered to that work. Tournees Film Festival: Female Directors Night
Begins at 7:00 p.m., Egyptian Theater in downtown DeKalb

Once again, the Tournees Film Festival is coming to DeKalb, and Tuesday, March 27th is Female Directors Night. "La Belle Endormie" ("The Sleeping Beauty"), directed by Catherine Breillat, is being shown at 7:00 p.m. Then, "Coco Avant Chanel" ("Coco Before Chanel"), directed by Anne Fonatine, begins at 9:00 p.m. Free admission with student ID. $7 for adults and $5 for seniors. "Precious Knowledge” Film Screening & Discussion
6:30 p.m., Montgomery Hall Auditorium

While 48% of Mexican American students currently drop out of high school, Tucson High’s Mexican American Studies Program has become a national model of educational success. The filmmakers spent a year in the classroom filming this innovative social justice curriculum, documenting the transformative impact on students who become engaged, informed, and active in the their communities. The Women's Resource Center Victim Advocacy Services presents NIU's third annual Rock Against Rape kick-off event for Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. As a nationwide event held annually in communities and on college campuses, Rock Against Rape exhibits individuals and group bands from the campus and community to instill awareness about sexual assault.
