WOMS 430, Special Topics in Women's Studies: Gender, Sex, and Power in Global Relations

(T 6-8.40; Colette Morrow)

This course uses a feminist standpoint to explore the nature of power and how it has been deployed globally to benefit some populations at the expense of others. Emphasis will be on how oppressed populations, through both collective and individual actions, resist controls imposed on them. Students will consider how these dynamics of power and resistance are shaped by intersections of gender, race, class, sexuality, national and religious identities, and other social categories. Creating and analyzing strategies for remedying power inequities will be a central focus of discussion on such topics as women's status and social roles, reproductive choice and regulation, wage equity, modes of leadership, the possibilities for establishing alliances across differences, human rights, and various approaches to social and economic development.
