APA Reference List

The following guidelines for compiling a Works Cited List in APA style are outlined in Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 5th ed. (Washington, DC: APA, 2003). The sections referenced are 4.01-4.86.

In APA documentation style, all sources that are used in a paper should be included in a Reference List at the end of the paper. Each source listed in the Reference List should also be cited in the text.

Below is a list of the most commonly cited types of sources following the APA manual.

Books

A Book by One Author

The author's first name should not be spelled out.

Reese, G. (2000). Database programming with JDBC and Java. Beijing: O'Reilly.

A Book by Two or More Authors

Dietel, H., & Dietel, P. (1999). C how to program. New Jersey: Prentice Hall.

Two or More Books by the Same Author

The name of the author is used in all entries. The items are ordered by publication date. If the date is the same, the entries are then alphabetized by title.

Flanagan, D. (1999). Java foundation classes in a nutshell. Beijing: O'Reilly. Flanagan, D. (1999). Java in a Nutshell. Beijing: O'Reilly.

Two or More Books by the Same Authors

The names of the authors are used in all entries. The items are ordered by publication date. If the date is the same, the entries are then alphabetized by title.

Dietel, H., & Dietel, P. (1999). C how to program. New Jersey: Prentice Hall.

Dietel, H., & Dietel, P. (2000). C++ how to program. New Jersey: Prentice Hall.

A Book by Two or More Authors

Dietel, H., & Dietel, P. (1999). C how to program. New Jersey: Prentice Hall.

Anthology

The editor's name should be followed by (Ed.).

Baym, N., (Ed.). (2002). The Norton anthology of American literature. New York: Norton and Company.

An Article in An Anthology

Start with the article's author, the title of the article enclosed in quotation marks, then the editor's name, the name of the anthology, publishing information, and the pages in the anthology.

Bradford, W. (2002). Of Plymouth plantation. In N. Baym (Ed.), The Norton anthology of American literature (pp. 164-202). New York: Norton and Company.

Periodicals

An Article in a Scholarly Journal with Continuous Pagination

Dickey, M. D. (2007). Game design and learning: a conjectural analysis of how massively multiple online role-playing games (MMORPGs) foster intrinsic motivation. Educational Technology, Research, & Development, 55, 253-273.

An Article in a Scholarly Journal with Separate Pagination for Each Issue

Miller, C. T. (2007). Enhancing web-based instruction using a person-centered model of instruction. Quarterly Review of Distance Education, 8(2), 25-34.

An Article in a Newspaper

McMurtrie B. (2006, February 24). Europe's Education Chief Seeks Transatlantic Cooperation. Chronicle of Higher Education, p. A39.

An Article in a Magazine

Lowth, C. (2004, April). The Hidden Treasures of iptables. Linux Journal, 120, 24-29.

Electronic Sources

An Article on an Internet Site

Pollard, N. (2007, October 9). Hard disk pioneers win physics Nobel. Retreived October 9, 2007 from http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSL0923590220071009

An Entire Internet Site

An Article in an Online Periodical

An E-mail

In an APA style paper, e-mail messages are not included in the Reference list, but they are cited in the text. Find more information on citing electronic sources at APA Style Electronic Media and URLs
