Works Cited List (MLA) or Reference List (APA)

  • appears at the end of the paper on a separate numbered page with the title on top that says "Works Cited" (MLA) or "Reference List" (APA)
  • contains all works cited in the paper
  • makes citations in text easier by allowing writers to cite only abbreviated information

Rule to Remember

Works Cited and Reference lists make citations in the text easier by allowing to cite abbreviated information.

This tutorial includes only the most commonly cited kinds of sources. To learn how to cite less commonly seen works, consult the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed. by Joseph Gribaldi (New York: MLA, 2003) or the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed. (Washington, DC: APA, 2003).
