Website Inventory

Each department is encouraged to perform an audit of its existing webpages to determine which pages are outdated and should be removed or updated.

Audit & File Information

As each page is evaluated, it is essential to document the following information:

Audit Information

  • Audit Date - the date the audit is performed
  • Audited By - the person performing the audit

File Information

  • Path and File - the URL of the webpage being audited
  • Modification Date - date of the most recent modification to the page
  • Web Page Statistics – how many visitors to this page in a specified time period
  • Suggested Navigation Category - identify the appropriate navigation category for the page
  • Anticipated Audience - identify the audience the page serves

Content Analysis

  • Is the content accurate? Read the page to ensure that the information is accurate. This might require some research.
  • Is the content relevant? Consider the information your site needs to deliver, the audiences you serve and the visitor statistics.
  • Is the content readable? Can the intended audience read and understand the information?
  • Are all the links correct? Do all the links on the page work?
  • Is the spelling correct? Select all text on the current page and copy it to the clipboard. Open a new Word document. From the Edit menu, select Paste Special. Select Unformatted Text from the menu. Perform a Spell Check on the pasted text.

Code Analysis

  • Do all images have ALT text? Does every image on the page have alternate text? It is acceptable for the ALT to be empty (ALT=””) for decorative images or images that convey no information. It is not acceptable for the ALT text to be missing altogether. See below for instructions on finding the alternate text.
  • Are the keywords correct? Does the list of keywords for the page seem accurate?
  • Is the description correct? Does the description for this page seem accurate for the page?

Search Results

  • Perform a search that you would expect to return the page.
  • Note the filename of the page that comes up first.
