Keeping a Log - NIU - Writing Across the Curriculum

The NIU Writing Consultants Handbook

Keeping a Log

No two consulting experiences will ever be the same, and so documents reflecting the challenges and situations consultants have encountered are useful. By keeping a record of such experiences as meetings with faculty members, research methodologies, and interactions with students, consultants will help the program to grow in two ways.

First, the log is an outlet for the type of summary-response writing that fosters personal understanding and growth, much the same as a writing journal. Second, this record functions as a form of research that highlights problems and solutions and, as a mirror of consulting activity, is an important archive. Copies of the logs from numerous departments will be compiled into a single file and made available to all consultants. In time this resource will provide a record of the evolution of the Writing Consultants Program as a whole.
