COMMITTEE FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM GRANTS

Return to CIUE/WAC Page

The Committee for the Improvement of Undergraduate Education at Northern Illinois University wishes to announce the availability of grants to support projects for the improvement of writing instruction in courses throughout the university. These grants are available through cooperation with the Writing Across the Curriculum program.

OBJECTIVES AND CRITERIA

Faculty members teaching undergraduate courses who wish to conduct research in or develop projects toward the improvement of writing instruction within their discipline may submit a proposal to the coordinator of Writing Across the Curriculum in the format outlined. Proposals will usually be supported to a maximum of $1,000. The Writing Across the Curriculum Advisory Board may recommend total, part, or no funding.

In keeping with the role of the committee, projects must be directed toward the improvement of instruction. Development of innovative syllabi that incorporate writing, or research on discipline or profession specific writing environments, interdisciplinary writing environments, writing to learn methodology, writing processes, or writing assessment are all within the realm of improvement of instruction. The project application must contain proposed means for determining whether an addition to knowledge about instruction or improved applications or delivery of instruction is actually achieved. You may wish to consult the coordinator of writing across the curriculum (Brad Peters 753-6718) with regard to your proposal.

In the event a project has several stages or extends over a long period of time such as a year or longer, submit the project in its entirely with the stages clearly delineated. It may be that initial stages can be funded and additional funding granted in the next fiscal period.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS

Faculty members may submit proposals at any time during the year, although the committee ordinarily does not meet during the summer. When a proposal comes in, it is routed to committee members and, if the committee finds that the proposal satisfies the criteria for approval, it is funded on a first-come-first-served basis. In order to get money for summer projects or projects that begin in the summer, proposals should be submitted by March 15 (or by the first day of classes following this date, in the event that it occurs during spring break).

BUDGET

Supportable items will be determined by the above objectives and criteria and may include equipment (which becomes the property of the university), materials and audio/visual aids, travel (for purpose of research or observation related to the project), manuscript preparation, personal services (graduate assistant and student help, consultant's fees, extra secretarial services), and other justifiable project-related expenses, up to the usual $1,000 maximum.

Requests for support for departmental services (e.g., manuscript typing, commodities, printing and duplicating, other types of travel, etc., as well as other university services) should be accompanied by an explanation why such departmental, or university services are not available.

PLEASE SUBMIT THREE (3) COPIES OF YOUR PROPOSAL

FINAL REPORT

Faculty whose projects are funded will submit a brief (one-page) report within 60 days of the completion of the project to the Committee for the Improvement of Undergraduate Education. Recipients who do not submit reports will not be eligible for future funding. Faculty will also submit a more extensive report and other pertinent materials (syllabi, assignments, samples of writing, descriptive analyses) to the coordinator of Writing Across the Curriculum within 60 days of the completion of the project.
