If we are to realize the goals set forth in our Great Journeys Strategic Plan and the other major planning documents we have produced in the recent past, NIU must develop a sustainable financial model.  A sustainable model must place a premium on efficiency, resource allocation and reallocation of our highest priorities, and create a culture of budget transparency.

Issues and Measures

While we all desire and hope for a turnaround in state support for public higher education and timely and predictable reimbursements from the state, it is imperative that we develop new sources of revenue other than excessive increases in student tuition and fees. The sustainability working group might consider such measures as:

  • Private fund goals based on our successful True North campaign
  • Percentage of Alumni Giving
  • The optimal undergraduate and graduate enrollment needed to sustain the current level of resource needs
  • Goals for external grants and contracts
  • Service Fees associated with university expertise (UBH)
  • Goals for maximizing non-competitive Federal Funding
  • Goals for administrative cost reductions on other efficiencies
  • Organizational efficiency and effectiveness
  • Procedural policy efficiencies
