Facilities and Environment

NIU has an extensive, complex, and impressive array of facilities for teaching, research, service, athletics, maintenance and operations, housing, and health and public safety. These facilities include not only those located on the main DeKalb campus, but also educational sites located in Rockford, Naperville, Hoffman Estates, and Lorado Taft in Oregon, Illinois. In the next decade, NIU will invest over $200 million to add new and renovate existing student housing, and to improve our classroom and academic buildings. We anticipate that before 2020, the university will program and construct a major technology based academic building on the DeKalb campus. As we plan, build and renovate our facilities, we must ensure that they are technology rich, accessible, energy efficient, and conform to a high architectural style.
As we look forward to the next decade, we should focus our efforts on a safe, beautiful and accessible campus.
Issues and Measures
There are many standard measures that the working group might consider in the area of Facilities and Environment for instance:
- The percentage of facilities that meet and exceed ADA standards
- The diffusion of wireless and other state-of-the-art IT through the campus including smart classrooms
- The number of energy efficient programs and measures adopted by the campus
- The degree to which the campus becomes “green” and environmentally friendly
- The level of investment in capital renewal activities
- Establish campus beautification goals
