How to Apply

USOAR Step-by-Step

  1. This is the fun part. What would you like to know more about? Where would you like to find that information? Another state? Another country? Dream up your proposal for a USOAR grant.
  2. Share your idea with a professor of your choosing. If the professor is willing to serve as the advisor for your USOAR project, the wheels are in motion.
  3. Obtain a copy of the proposal here, complete it and submit an electronic copy of your proposal with your professor’s signature to ugresearch@niu.edu (Please include all supplemental materials with your proposal).  Fall submissions will be accepted until Friday, October 19, 2012 and spring submissions will be accepted until Friday, February 1, 2013.
  4. Students whose projects are selected are granted up to $2,500 and can begin their projects as early as January 1, 2013 or anytime during the 12 months afterward. You are responsible for covering expenses beyond $2,500.
  5. Projects should come under the direct supervision and evaluation of members of the regular faculty. Students must submit documentation (final report, receipts, pictures) to the Office of Student Engagement & Experiential Learning within 6 weeks of completion of their project.
