Dear Prospective Student, Thank you for your interest in Northern Illinois University’s School of Theatre and Dance programs. We offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Studies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with emphases in your choice of acting, design and technology, and dance performance. Admission to the B.A. Theatre Studies degree emphasis is based on university admission; interview with the theatre studies faculty, review of three letters of recommendation, and a resume. The B.A. Theatre Studies emphasis is a demanding course of academic and artistic study in directing, performance, storytelling, stage management, dramaturgy, and/or playwriting. This emphasis of study will provide the necessary basic training needed for a possible professional or academic career in the theatre. Acceptance into the B.F.A. acting emphasis is based on university admission and completing a successful audition and interview with a member of our acting faculty. The B.F.A. acting emphasis is a very intensive professional training program focused on the art form of acting and designed to provide the necessary skills for potential careers in theatre and film. Training theatre artists and students, and advance study in the theatrical arts. Acceptance into the B.F.A. emphasis in design and technology is based on university admission and completing a successful interview and portfolio review with a member of our design and technology faculty. This emphasis provides a strong foundation for professional careers in theatre communication and allied entertainment fields, whether in costume, lighting, or scenery. Acceptance into the B.F.A. emphasis in dance performance is based upon university admission. Auditions are not required for initial acceptance to the emphasis, though a proficiency review is conducted before the completion of 18 semester hours. Majors are required to take between ten and seventeen technique classes per week. This emphasis is for students interested in continuing their dance training at a university in preparation for a potential career in dance.
