Blue Stockings

By Jessica Swale

October 25-29, 2017

Blue Stockings is the enlightening, funny, and heartfelt struggle of four young women who have an unparalleled determination to earn their right to graduate.

The setting is Girton College, Cambridge, in 1896; the first college in Britain to admit women. Tess Moffat and her fellow first-years are determined to win the right to graduate, lest they finish college and simply end up a ‘blue stocking,’ a derogatory term used for erudite females who speak their minds. In other words, they would be considered unnatural and unmarriageable.

Refusing to believe that their only place is married and in the home, the four trailblazers enter Girton with a thirst for intellectual discovery. As witty and bright as they come, grades are the least of the women’s worries. During a tumultuous first year, strength of character is tested as they encounter the unfairness of class division, the ache of heartbreak, and the savagery of their male peers who fight them every step of the way.

Shockingly relevant, Blue Stockings will have you cheering for the cause alongside Tess and her classmates as you experience the whimsy and imagination that come with educational, social, and self discovery.
