Ryan holds an MFA in acting from Northern Illinois University and a BFA in theatre with an emphasis in directing and acting from Abilene Christian University. He has extensive background in the work of Lloyd Williamson, Michael Chekhov, Catherine Fitzmaurice, and Sanford Meisner. He studied internationally at the Moscow Art Theatre, has presented at national theatre conferences, and is currently a candidate for certification as a Fitzmaurice Teacher, having been selected by Catherine Fitzmaurice for the XII and final 1st generation associate teacher certification program.
As a company member of The Organic Theater Company in Chicago, Ryan has been critically praised for his "adept physical comedy," "wonderful comedic timing," and "innate ability to transform from character to character." As a performance faculty member in the Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance, Ryan teaches acting, voice, and movement in the BFA in acting program. He's also responsible for the actor training of the BA theatre students and teaches introduction to theatre, a large lecture class of 150+ students that fulfills the humanities (Bachelor of Fine Arts) university requirement.
Before returning to teach at his alma mater, Ryan served as director and voice/movement instructor for the Gately/Poole Conservatory, a position he earned while working with master Meisner teacher and NIU Professor Emerita Kathryn Gately during his graduate training. He also taught communication courses at Kishwaukee Community College, performed in Chicago, and did industrial/commercial work for NIU and local businesses.
