MFA Emphasis in Lighting Design

As designers we are all storytellers, and lighting design holds a unique position among the disciplines on that front. Supporting and responding in real time to the action on stage, our work sets the mood, informs the setting and helps bring the audience on the emotional journey of our story.

Focusing on artistic vision, collaboration and technical mastery, the MFA program at NIU trains young designers for a life in professional theatre. We train our students in all the skills necessary to work as a professional, including artistic research, graphic and digital pre-visualization and Vectorworks drafting. Our students practice their art constantly, designing multiple shows every semester and learning to truly collaborate with their peers.

The area of lighting design is centered around a core of courses appropriate to the training of aesthetically sensitive, technically proficient lighting artists for all phases of the theatre.

Course work focuses on functional, expressive and compositional aspects of light supported by special skill courses in rendering techniques, drafting (including computer-aided paper-work techniques), projection aesthetics and related technologies.

Special needs of each student will be approached through individualized instruction and supervised design experiences in variety of production styles and performance spaces on and off campus.
