Why did you decide to study abroad?

I had the unique opportunity of a study abroad experience being built into my major, but it was one of the reasons why I decided to go to NIU.

Why do you think it’s important to study abroad?

Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity to go and study in another country while still getting NIU credit. Getting to study and live in another country for a length of time (in my case it was an entire semester) means that you get to live as a local and experience a new side of the world. I can definitely say that my world perspective has grown because of my study abroad experience.

Any tips for students interested in studying abroad?

PLAN OUT YOUR WEEKENDS!! Although this seems a little crazy, you are going to want to do it. In Moscow, the only day I didn’t have class was Sunday, and so that one day a week was the only time I had to plan any trips/explore. My first few weekends I stayed home or close to my dorm, and I ended up cramming a lot into the final few weekends of the semester that I wish I would have done as soon as I got there.

Favorite excursion or adventure while abroad

My program organized a three-day trip to St. Petersburg, which was breathtaking. We spent the days exploring grand palaces and some of the top museums in the world, and at night we explored the night life of the city. It was a packed adventure, but also some really good times.
