Community Service at NIU

The Department of Student Involvement and Leadership Development firmly believes in the value of service to one’s community and has thus incorporated community service as a component of the Department’s focus.

Why serve?

  • Give back to the community
  • Build stronger connections between Northern, DeKalb, and surrounding communities
  • Builds strong friendships with your fellow students
  • Gain fulfilling experiences
  • Realizing/seeing the impact you and others can have on your home community
  • Building a community where the NIU campus and surrounding community are included
  • Travel; take the opportunity to travel the country with Alternative Spring Break

How do I get involved?

To find the service opportunity which best fits you; search our ongoing and upcoming service opportunities. If you are still unsure about the experience, feel free to contact us at the Student Involvement & Leadership Development at 815-753-6703 to arrange a consultation. We would be more than happy to discuss community service opportunities and find the best fit for you.
