Student Involvement & Leadership Development

Join a Chapter

Being a part of a sorority or fraternity is a unique experience that will last a lifetime.  You will make life-long friendships and enjoy a supportive environment away from home.  Becoming a part of NIU’s Greek community will provide you with many leadership, scholarship, and community service opportunities. Greek life is one of the best ways to get involved both within the University and within the community.

Different fraternity councils have different methods of recruitment. The first step to becoming a member of an Interfraternity Council (IFC) or College Panhellenic Council (CPC) chapter is to participate in the Recruitment (formerly known as rush) or Intake process.  Through this process, you will discover what IFC and CPC have to offer, make new friends, and become acquainted with the IFC and CPC chapters. The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) have a recruitment method that varies from chapter to chapter. The first step to joining one of these two councils is to ask a current member about upcoming events.

College Panhellenic Council (CPC)

Sorority recruitment begins with a recruitment orientation on Wednesday, September 5th or Thursday, September 6th (attendance at one orientation is necessary).  Formal recruitment takes place on Friday, September 7th-Sunday, September 9th.

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

Fraternity Recruitment is a year-round informal process.  Men are encouraged to attend the recruitment events hosted by the fraternities during the academic year. Chapters invite men to visit and learn about their fraternity through informal activities like sporting events, athletic contests or cookouts.

Multicultutral Greek Council (MGC)

Community, collaboration and teamwork are what the Multicultural Greek Council is all about. Affectionately called (MGC) we come together under this umbrella to support students through programs that enhance the campus and build the Greek community. Students interested in becoming members of a fraternity or a sorority under MGC should attend an informational for that organization. Students will receive requirements and recommendations on how to navigate the intake process. So come out and support MGC through one of our many programs.  See you soon!

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is composed of nine historically African American Greek-letter organizations.  These chapters recruit throughout the year.  The membership requirements and programs vary by organization.  The process, referred to as "Membership Intake", is highly regulated by the individual national organizations. To learn more about joining an NPHC chapter, plan to attend various activities and programs sponsored by the NPHC and individual chapters that take place throughout the academic year.
