 Leadership Academy

The NIU Leadership Academy is a premier leadership development program for students at Northern Illinois University. The program is primarily based on Kouzes and Posner's book "The Leadership Challenge" (2007). Kouzes and Posner assert that leadership can be a learned skill and that there are five practices of exemplary leadership which can be developed in order to become an engaging leader. The five practices of exemplary leadership are "Model the Way," "Inspire a Shared Vision," "Challenge the Process," "Enable Others to Act," and "Encourage the Heart."

The Leadership Academy is also anchored in NIU's commitment to the community, region, and world. Program content intentionally engages students in dialogues with leaders from NIU and beyond, enhancing their professional connections and networking abilities. The three-tier program combines theoretical and practical leadership experiences to create an interactive learning environment for future leaders.

Leadership Academy Application

Tier 1: Emerging Leaders (development checklist)

Emerging Leaders is the first tier of the curriculum.  It is designed to enhance participants’ leadership skills by introducing them to concepts and purposes of leadership as well as to the various leadership opportunities on campus.  During this tier, students have the opportunity to join organizations, articulate a vision in a journal, get involved in the community through volunteer work, and much more.

Tier 2: Evolving Leaders (development checklist)

Upon successful completion of the first tier, student leaders are then transitioned into the second, or Evolving Leaders, tier.  Therein, the student leaders begin implementing their newly learned leadership skills by moving into organizational leadership positions, participating in leadership seminars or conferences, hosting round table discussions, or a plethora of approved, hands on, experiences.

Tier 3: Engaging Leaders (development checklist)

In the third, Engaging Leaders, tier of the curriculum, student leaders have the opportunity to share with other Leadership Academy members how their leadership experiences have shaped them. Students in this tier also have the opportunity to create change through writing student association legislation, delivering speeches, and so much more.

It is our hope that through this combination of curricular (classroom based) and co-curricular (outside the classroom) learning experiences, students will be better prepared for leadership roles in our community and around the world.
