NIU Cares Day is a campus-wide day of community service. Volunteers comprised of NIU students, faculty, and staff come together once a year to complete projects that benefit DeKalb County’s not-for-profit organizations and community agencies as a way of thanking the community for their support of the institution and its mission. NIU volunteers will be transported to locations around the county to spend the day planting, painting, cleaning, sorting, assisting with events, and various other tasks.
Students can register as individuals (register for Team-NIU Cares) or in teams. We recommend that volunteer teams contain no more than 10-15 people (If you have a larger group of volunteers, please consider splitting the group up into multiple teams). Each team must have one Team Leader (the leader and primary contact person for the team). In order to include a team in the online registration system, the Team Leader must email niucaresday@niu.edu with the team name and the Team Leader's contact information (email, phone, and Z-ID/A-ID). Team Leaders will attend an orientation prior to the event to receive event information and training.
Does your agency, organization, or home need volunteers to complete projects? Please fill out the Project Site Request (PDF) and submit using the return information provided on the form.
*Note that campus initiatives that organize campus volunteers (mainly students) to perform a variety of service projects throughout the greater DeKalb Community will not have project sites that are private property of Northern Illinois University faculty, staff, or students.
