Are you a staff member, faculty member, or graduate assistant looking to work alongside students who are doing great things for the community? Consider volunteering for NIU Cares Day!
Project Site Leaders
PSLs are assigned to a handful of project sites and serve as a primary contact for teams assigned to those sites during the day of service. While PSLs primarily assist with communication between the student volunteers, the site supervisor, and Home Base, it is possible that they may also be called upon to assist in the case of an unforeseen situation that requires staff intervention. PSLs can be faculty members, staff members, or graduate assistants from all areas of the university. The time commitment is typically 7:00 am-Noon or Noon-5:00 pm.
Training is provided prior to the event. Each volunteer receives a t-shirt and must be able to provide his/her own transportation between his/her assigned project sites. Serving as a PSL can be a great opportunity to connect with students outside the classroom as well as serve the community. Interested individuals can contact Destiny McDonald for more information.
NIU Cares Day begins each year with a volunteer kickoff event. Kickoff is held in a rally-format where we check our student volunteer teams in before the event, distribute materials, and allow our students the opportunity to absorb the magnitude of NIU Cares Day and the work that's about to be done. Kickoff needs volunteers to assist with the check-in process, t-shirt & water distribution, and crowd control. The time commitment for this position is typically 6:00-8:30 am and/or 11:00 am-1:30 pm. Interested individuals can contact Destiny McDonald.
A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to get NIU Cares Day ready each year, and we appreciate support of all types. The NIU Cares Day committee is frequently looking for donations, including financial contributions, food items, office supplies (badge holders, pens, printer paper, etc.), art materials (markers, construction paper, crayons, hole punches, etc.), and building supplies (heavy-duty garbage bags, work gloves, lightly-used garden tools, etc.). If you want to find out how you can support NIU Cares Day in your own way, contact Destiny McDonald at 815-753-6511.
