What is 'Huskies Can Build It'?

Huskies Can Build It! is a competition amongst student, faculty, and staff teams to see who can collect the most cans and build the most interesting structure from those cans! During Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (Nov. 15-22), teams will join in this competition for not only to see who wins, but also to help gather food for donation to local food pantries. Structures are typically built within a theme assigned by the office of Student Involvement & Leadership Development. Additionally, each team is paired with an engineering consultant from an NIU engineering student organization who will help student groups ensure that their structure is well built.

It's for a good cause!

Not only do teams get a chance to show their Huskie Pride, but they also work to help lessen the impact that hunger has in our community.

According to Feeding America, in 2011, 13.9% of DeKalb County residents reported being food insecure. Food security refers to a person or family’s lack of constant access to enough food to sustain a healthy life. At the state level, 15.2% of Illinois residents reported food insecurity in 2011. Feeding America estimated that would cost $762, 692, 290 to meet food needs in the entire state. Efforts like CANstruction help local food pantries provide food to those who are food insecure and lessen the impact of hunger.
