Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

Affirmative Action and Equity Compliance

We offer a variety of activities throughout the year for students to show their support for safety and awareness activities, including, but not limited to, consent, Title IX/Sexual Misconduct and sexual assault, stalking and mental health awareness months.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Distributing information around campus
  • Blogging and posting on social media
  • Posting informational flyers
  • Gathering data
  • Attending events which promote the safety of all at NIU.

Huskie Food Pantry

Volunteers are always needed at the Huskies Student Food Pantry. Students and/or student groups can volunteer to work when the pantry is open, help stock the shelves, unload food, etc. Visit Huskie Food Pantry to register to volunteer or send an email with any questions you may have.


Children's Home + Aid

Parents Care + Share is a program through Children's Home + Aid that provides support groups for parents and caregivers. These support groups give parents and caregivers an opportunity to learn new skills, engage in meaningful conversation, and expand their support networks all in an effort to prevent child abuse and neglect. An important part of these support groups is CHILDCARE. By providing childcare, parents and caregivers are able to fully engage in a group that is beneficial for themselves and their families. We are seeking experienced childcare for our groups.

This is a paid position. You get $20 for each session of childcare. This is a great way to volunteer your time and an easy way to make some extra money! To get started, contact Darci Thompson or call 309-834-5240 to schedule an interview.

Miscarriage Matters, Inc.

Volunteer hours are flexible. Make your own schedule

This web-based community offers support to the survivors of miscarriage, stillbirth and early infant loss. Members are offered a one-on-one support and mentoring program that is tailored to their individual needs. Volunteers are needed to serve on the Women of Empowerment and Miscarriage Matters 2 Men teams and are also needed for Live Chat Operators and Social Media Assistants. Crisis Line of Fox Valley

The Crisis Line of Fox Valley is a free service provided by the Association for Individual Development. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Callers receive free, confidential support and counseling from qualified employees and well-trained community volunteers. Potential volunteers need to contact Maureen or call 630-966-4020 for an application.

Adult day program volunteer opportunities are also available in Elgin, Aurora, Yorkville and Batavia.


PALS Programs

PALS Programs is looking for volunteers to staff 10 summer camp locations around the country, from Maine to California. Camp PALS provides one-week sleepaway camps for teens and young adults with Down syndrome. Counselors are paired one to one with campers for the week of amazing activities and trips. Apply to volunteer and be sure to visit the PALS Programs website or Facebook page for more information about camp dates and locations. Hope to see you this summer!


DeKalb County 4-H

Share your time and talents while gaining real-world work experiences. Try something new and different. 4-H is seeking mentors to lead DeKalb County youth in various project activities. Make a difference in your community by being part of a new adventure. DeKalb County 4-H is recruiting mentors to teach short-term Special Interest clubs on subjects that are interesting to both the mentor and the 4-H member. Photography, Cooking, Art, Theater, Gardening, Robotics and Dogs are just a few examples of potential clubs that can be offered with your help.

Youth Development training and support will be provided so no prior teaching experience is needed. Volunteer around your busy schedule and invite your friends to be a mentor with you. Everyone has something to offer. What kind of adventure do you want to take this year?

Raven's Husky Haven and Rescue

Spend time weekly bathing, brushing, and trimming the nails of our huskies. Make the huskies’ personal areas spotless while the giving the huskies the opportunity to socialize. Keeping the kennel spotless for when prospective adopters come. Help at fundraising/PR events, or in the preparation and planning stages.

Education & Relations: Demonstrate responsible pet ownership to school children and/or community groups. Assist in the basic obedience training of the huskies in our care.

DeKalb County Communiversity Gardens

The Communiversity Gardens began in 2014 with three gardens – the Huskie Service Scholar Gardens, the Native Plant Garden and the Sandra Streed Memorial Garden. In their first growing season, the gardens raised about 500 pounds of food to donate.

The Communiversity Gardens are unique among DCCG plots in that DCCG provides ongoing support, but NIU students and staff take the lead in maintaining the gardens. Volunteer to help the gardens today, there are various time slots available! 


TAILS Humane Society

Brooms and Brushes 

Volunteers assist Tails animal care staff in ensuring the dog and puppy cages/runs are properly cleaned and sanitized and properly set up in accordance with policies and procedures. Volunteers will also assist with providing proper dietary requirements and walking dogs for potty breaks.

Commitment: 2-3 hours each shift. 1 shift weekly.
Availability: Monday-Sunday 7-9am, Monday-Wednesday 4-6pm, Thursday-Friday 4-7pm, Saturday-Sunday 3-5pm
