Develop a program that would attract new, high-achieving students (and faculty) to NIU

Foster multidisciplinary scholarship

 

  • Establishing formal Associates and faculty Partners, based on participation in initial proposal development and implementation.
  • Developing, implementing, and obtaining IBHE approval for a broad but intellectually competitive ENVS curriculum that responds to current and projected needs of the marketplace.
  • Hiring a permanent Director and faculty searches for joint appointments between ESE and one of many associated tenuregranting departments in CLAS and CEET.
  • Hiring staff, including an Office Manager, a Program Coordinator, graduate and undergraduate student assistants, and instructors, as needed.
  • Establishing offices on central campus that will be welcoming to students and visiting scholars.
  • Fostering multidisciplinary research and other scholarship, through internal awards and the submission of external grants that encourage broad collaboration beyond traditional disciplines, with an explicit focus on actively incorporating students into faculty-directed research.
  • Develop bylaws and establish an independent advisory board.
  • Developing an outreach strategy that will ensure continued growth and sustainability of the program through:
  • Active communication with regional high schools and community colleges
    • Developing student internship opportunities with industry, government and NGOs
    • Student-centered on campus activities related to the mission of the Institute
    • Community activities that highlight the program
    • Participation in national and international conferences and other activities related to Environmental Studies programs
    • f. Fund a colloquium program.
  • Establish oversight over numerous NIU-owned woodland, wetland and prairie properties
  • ESE currently has 14 associates and 7 partners, representing 14 departments and 4 colleges (CLAS, CEET, Law and CHHS)
  • Developed a focused and competitive curriculum that includes a set of core courses and cross-listed courses that comprise 6 emphases: Biodiversity and Environmental Restoration, Energy Studies, Environmental Policy, Human Experience, Nongovernmental Organizations (collaborative with CLCE) and Water
  • Faculty Hires:
    • Director
    • Joint hire with Argonne
    • Search for CEET faculty member
    • 3 searches in FY12

  • Established Institute’s internal summer curriculum development and research grant award program
  • External grants have been submitted, including 2 NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) proposals
  • Bylaws have been drafted
  • Outreach programs continue to be developed and implemented.
  • Oversight over the NIU-owned properties has now formally been placed in the charge of the ESE Institute.
