STEM Saturday classes help students explore interesting topics through hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations. Parents are encouraged to attend students' classes and get in on the fun. This season's offerings include LEGO robotics, the science of music, Ardunios and STEM activities for young divas.

Spring 2016 Courses and Registration

Please take a close look at the descriptions for recommended ages for each class. Some classes are two sessions.

January 23 - LEGO Robotics - Introduction

Meeting Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Our popular LEGO Robotics courses combine the creativity and hands-on fun of LEGOs with the exciting challenges of building and programming real robots. In this beginner level class we introduce students to all the concepts needed to start designing and programming their own robotic creations. No prior experience in robotics or programming is required! This course is the perfect place to start for students who are interested in our upcoming LEGO Star Wars courses, but haven’t yet had experience using the LEGO robotics kits.

February 6 – STEM Divas 3D Printing

Meeting Room: NIU STEM Classroom (Swen Parson 146)

Our STEM Divas program unleashes beautiful minds by introducing younger girls to positive female STEM role models, through engaging projects that relate to their own lives and interests. 3D printers are being used to create the impossible every day, even printing real working organs! This STEM Divas session will be all about the amazing world of 3D printing. Divas will create their own 3D printed masterpieces as they design and print their own jewelry, keychains, and artwork using our 3D printers.

February 6 & 13 – Science of Music - SOLD OUT!

Music and STEM are everywhere! From the vibrations that allow instruments to create sounds to why some musical notes sound better together than others creating music is all about STEM. In this two-session class, students will perform a variety of hands-on experiments as they explore how different vibrations create different sounds and will even get use what they’ve learned to create their very own musical instruments!

February 20 & 27 – STEM Jr.

Our STEM Jr. classes give younger students a chance to get in on all the STEM fun! In this two part class we’ll be doing simple experiments and projects designed to help budding scientists and engineers understand how Science, Technology, Engineering and Math all work together to create amazing new ideas. A healthy dose of creativity is also important, as we’ll create our own solutions to a variety of fun and engaging challenges.

March 12 – STEM Divas Music

Our STEM Divas program unleashes beautiful minds by introducing younger girls to positive female STEM role models, through engaging projects that relate to their own lives and interests. In this session, our Divas will explore the world of music and song as they learn how instruments create sounds and how those sounds work together to create music. Divas will then use what they’ve learned to create their very own simple musical instruments.

March 12 & 19 – LEGO Robotics - STAR WARS Challenge

These ARE the droids you’re looking for! Our popular LEGO Robotics challenge classes are back, with an out-of-this-world twist.  In this two-session class, students will hone their programming and problem solving skills as they design, build, and program their own “droids” capable of successfully completing a variety of specially themed challenges. Students without previous programming experience are encouraged to take the LEGO Robotics Introduction course before attending this class.

April 2 – STEM Divas Tie Dye

Our STEM Divas program unleashes beautiful minds by introducing younger girls to positive female STEM role models, through engaging projects that relate to their own lives and interests. This session will be all about the chemistry of color! Divas will learn about how dyes are made and how different dyes can be used to color different materials. All students will also get to create their very own tie-dyed garment to take home and keep!

April 9 & 16 – Electronics & Soldering - SOLD OUT

Electronic devices have become a very important part of our daily lives. In this class, students will get a hands-on look at the different components that work together to create their favorite electronic devices. We will explore concepts of electricity and the functions of some common types of electrical components that can be found in all electronic devices. Students will also develop basic soldering skills as they learn to solder these components. They will also develop critical thinking and problem solving skills as they construct and troubleshoot their very own electronics projects. Registration price includes the cost of the electronics project, which the students will be able to take home after the class.

April 23 & 30 – Arduinos – Beginner’s Class

Have you joined the maker movement yet? Find out what it’s all about as we learn how to create responsive electronic projects using Arduino microcontrollers. An Arduino is a small computer that can be used to read sensors and control lights, motors and lot’s more! Arduinos are at the heart of the Maker Movement and are an easy and fun way to add automation and interaction to your projects. For students with no previous experience in programming, the morning sessions will start at the beginning and introduce the basics. The beginner’s class will focus on using the Arduino to control simple outputs like LEDs, motors, and speakers as well as using simple inputs such as buttons and knobs. If you’ve been wondering what all the hype is about, here’s your chance to find out! All students will get to keep the Arduino Uno board they use in class.

Our STEM Jr classes give younger students a chance to get in on all the STEM fun! Do you like solving problems? Well, engineers are professional problem solvers! In this two-part class we’ll be looking at the different types of engineering and some of the challenges that engineers help overcome every day. We’ll then use the engineering design process to create and refine our own solutions to several fun and exciting challenges. No prior engineering experience needed!

May 7 _ STEM Divas Stop Motion Animation

Our STEM Divas program unleashes beautiful minds by introducing younger girls to positive female STEM role models through engaging projects that relate to their own lives and interests. In this class we’ll be bringing our imaginations to the screen using stop motion animation. Divas are encouraged to bring a small toy or other object they’d like to see come to life and we’ll supply everything else they need to create their very own short animation project!

May 7 & 14 – Arduinos – Advanced Class
