STEM Saturday classes help students explore interesting topics through hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations. Parents are encouraged to attend students' classes and get in on the fun. This season's offerings include methods of flight, chemistry investigations, computer programming and STEM activities for young divas.

Fall 2016 Courses and Registration

Please take a close look at the descriptions for recommended ages for each class. Some classes are two sessions.

October 15 and 22 - STEM Jr: LEGO Robotics Intro

Meeting Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm
Meeting Room: NIU STEM Classroom (Swen Parson 146)

Join us for a fun LEGO Robotics class introducing the functions of the LEGO Mindstorms robots and exploring basic programming concepts. Learn from experienced engineers how to design your own robot while exploring the role that robots play in our life and how they can be used to solve real world problems. No prior experience with programming or robotics is needed.  This is a two-part class.

October 29 – STEM DIVAS: Engineering 101

Meeting Time: 9:00am – 1:00pm
Meeting Room:  NIU STEM Classroom (Swen Parson 146)

Do you like solving problems? Well, engineers are professional problem solvers! In this class, you will look at the different types of engineering, and some of the challenges that engineers help overcome every day. Then you’ll use the engineering design process to create and refine your own solutions to several fun and exciting challenges. This class will introduce STEM Divas to the concepts of engineering and design with simple, hands-on activities and projects to stimulate their creative thinking. Working together to solve fun building challenges will boost STEM Divas’ confidence and innovation skills. Each student will leave with a project that they will be proud to have constructed.

October 29 and November 5 – Chemistry Investigation

Meeting Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm

This class is sure to get a reaction! Come get a hands-on look at some basic chemistry as students perform fun and easy experiments that will teach them about chemical reactions. We’ll do experiments with acids and bases, liquid nitrogen, tie dye and even make our own glow in the dark slime! Students should bring an item from home to tie dye. Items should be 100% cotton for best results. This is a two-part class.

October 29 and Nov 5 – STEM Jr: Electronics & Electricity

Meeting Time: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Electronic devices have become a very important part of our daily lives. In this class, students will get a hands-on look at the different components that work together to create their favorite electronic devices. They will explore concepts of electricity and the functions of some common types of electrical components that can be found in all electronic devices. Students will also develop basic soldering skills as they learn to solder these components. Registration price includes the cost of the electronics project which the students will be able to take home after the class. This is a two-part class.

November 12 and 19 – STEM Divas- Advanced 3D Printing and Intro to Scratch programming

Meeting Time: 9:00am – 1:00pm
Meeting Room: NIU STEM Classroom (Swen Parson 146)

Our STEM Divas program unleashes beautiful minds by introducing younger girls to positive female STEM role models through engaging projects that relate to their own lives and interests. 3D printers are used to create the impossible every day, even printing real working organs! The first part of this two-part class will be all about the amazing world of 3D printing! Divas will use CAD software to create their own personal figurine to take home, anything from action figures and toy cars to bracelets and toy pets. In the second part, STEM Divas will explore Scratch, a programming language and an online community where students can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world. This is a two-part class.

November 19 - STEM Jr: Computer Programing with Scratch

Scratch is a fun programming language and an online community where students can program and share interactive media such as stories, games, and animation with people from all over the world. As students create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. In this class we will look at the basics of Scratch programming and learn techniques to design our own creative applications.

December 10 – Holiday Party

Our annual holiday party is our way of saying thanks to all our students and their families who participated in the fall 2016 STEM Saturday classes!  We’ll spend half the time doing a special holiday-themed demonstration show, complete with refreshments. The other half will be spent making science-themed gifts with the kids, while the adults get a chance to hear about some of our favorite STEMtastic gift ideas.
