STEM Saturday classes help students explore interesting topics through hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations. Parents are encouraged to attend students' classes and get in on the fun. This season's offerings include methods of flight, chemistry investigations, computer programming and STEM activities for young divas.

STEM Saturday Courses 2016-2017

Please take a close look at the descriptions for recommended ages for each class. Some classes are two sessions.

December 10 – Holiday Party

Meeting Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Our annual holiday party is our way of saying thanks to all our students and their families who participated in the fall 2016 STEM Saturday classes!  We’ll spend half the time doing a special holiday-themed demonstration show, complete with refreshments. The other half will be spent making science-themed gifts with the kids, while the adults get a chance to hear about some of our favorite STEMtastic gift ideas.

Jan 28 and Feb 4 – STEM from a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Hot on the heels of the new Star Wars movie, our first class of 2017 is sure to be out of this world. Students will learn all about the science of Star Wars as they create their own handheld “hologram projectors,” explore the science behind The Force, and even build their own working light sabers! Please note this class will meet over two weeks.

Feb 11 - STEM Divas:  Sweet on STEM

Just in time for Valentine’s day, this is one class you’re sure to love! Our STEM Divas will explore basic chemistry as they make their own candies and scented lotions, as well engineering and design as they create projects such as light-up flowers and heart-shaped string art.  This class will only meet once.

Feb 25 and March 4 – CSI: NIU

Meeting Times: 9:00am – 12:00pm

There’s a mystery afoot, and who better to solve it than you! Students will learn the importance of critical thinking and deduction as they develop the skills needed to solve the puzzle. From analyzing fingerprints to using logic to rule out suspects, students will learn about many of the tools used by real detectives to solve real crimes while working together to solve a mystery of their own.  Please note this class will meet over two weeks.

March 11 and 18 – Arduinos: Join the Maker Movement!

Arduinos are small computers that can be used to create a wide variety of different electronic projects. In this class students will learn some of the different ways that Arduinos can be used in their own projects, and the basics of programming them. In-class projects will range from lighting LEDs to creating an interactive game. Students will have the option to purchase the board they used in class, so they can continue the fun after the class has finished. (Students may purchase a Redboard for $20 at the end of the class. This does not include the entire kit, but only the board. Your registration confirmation email will include information on where to purchase the same kit we will be using in class.)

April 1 – STEM Divas:  Wearable Tech

Come get your bling on with our wearable technology class. In this class students will create their own small electric circuits that can be used to add lights and other tech to their fashions. Students will learn about electricity and LEDs, as well as soldering and basic circuitry. This class will only meet once.

April 8 – STEM Jr:  Rube Goldberg Machines

If you’ve ever played the game Mousetrap, then you know what a Rube Goldberg Machine is. In this exciting class, students will learn all about the mechanics of movement as they create their own wacky machine. They will explore the six different types of Simple Machines, and learn how they can work together to create more complex and interesting interactions. This class will only meet once.

April 22 – STEM Divas:  Saving the World

In honor of Earth Day, this very special STEM Divas class is all about how you can help save the world. Students will explore easy and fun ways that they can help take care of the Earth at home. We’ll design and build our own windmills, make working water filters, and even learn about composting and recycling. For anyone who has ever wanted to help save the world, this is the class for you! This class will only meet once.

April 22 and 29– Electronics and Soldering

Electronic devices have become a very important part of our daily lives. In this class, students will get a hands-on look at the different components that work together to create their favorite electronic devices. They will explore concepts of electricity and the functions of some common types of electrical components that can be found in all electronic devices. Students will also develop basic soldering skills as they learn to solder these components. Registration price includes the cost of the electronics project which the students will be able to take home after the class. Please note this class will meet over two weeks.

April 29 and May 6 – Learning to Fly

Meeting Times: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Meeting Room:  NIU STEM Classroom (Swen Parson 146)

Since the dawn of time, man has dreamed of taking flight. In this class, we’ll do that! The first meeting will be held in our STEM Classroom in DeKalb, and we will spend the day learning about the science of flight and creating our own hot air balloons and other flying craft.

The second session will be held at iFLY in Naperville. Here, students will be guided through interactive presentations, demos in the wind tunnel and STEM lab actives. Every student will be trained by the iFLY flight instructors before entering the unique vertical wind tunnel and experiencing indoor skydiving.

Price includes the iFLY admission on May 6. NOTE: First meeting ONLY will be at DeKalb campus. May 6th we will all meet at iFLY Naperville. Transportation to iFLY is NOT provided.

May 13 – Rocketry and Spaceflight

Meeting Time: 9:00am – 1:00pm
Meeting Room: NIU STEM Classroom (Swen Parson 146)
We’re going to finish our spring season of classes with a bang! Students will learn all about rockets and spaceflight as they construct their own working model rocket. Estes model rocket kits will be supplied, and after we’ve finished building our rockets we’ll go to the field by our Engineering building for a pizza powered rocket lunch. We’ll provide the pizza and drinks, and we’ll all get a chance to actually launch our rockets. The rockets are reusable, so students will be able to bring them home and launch them again and again!  At noon we will move to the Engineering field for our picnic launch. The fee for this class includes the cost of the rocket kit. This class will only meet once.
