Sociology Program Requirements

  • GRE: Contact the Graduate Director to see if your application requires the GRE. You can learn more about the GRE at www.ets.org. The sociology program at NIU prefers applicants with a minimum of 150 (450 on the old scoring system) on the verbal and 148 (600 on the old system) on the quantitative sections of the GRE.
  • GPA: The Graduate School at NIU requires at least a 2.75 undergraduate GPA for admission; we prefer applicants with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Undergraduate classes in sociological theory and methods (otherwise conditional admission requirements)
  • The Sociology Program has a priority deadline of February 1.
