International Sociology - Learn to Discover

Research

Several of our NIU sociology faculty publish and have research areas that directly engage international issues, such as terrorism, democracy and nation building. Other faculty in the department also publish some of their research on international topics and present at international conferences.  Our sociology students are able to conduct research on international concerns with the supervision of our faculty.  The department is home to the international journal, African Conflict and Peacebuilding Review, with Dr. Abu Bah serving as editor.

Courses

NIU's Sociology program offers students a wide range of courses with international themes they can sign up for! In 2010, our department was nominated and recognized by the Division of International Programs for our contributions toward International Education at NIU.  We have also participated in the Study Abroad program, offering students an opportunity to travel with a sociology professor and learn first hand about the world.  Coursework in sociology classes allows students a chance to gain a sociologically informed, global perspective.

Student Experiences

Sociology students can combine their classroom understanding of world issues with actual travel experiences. These life-changing experiences help shape students' future career goals.  Many programs are available to help students who are currently enrolled at NIU embark on a journey toward international educational opportunities.  Our sociology students have utilized Study Abroad, USOAR, the Peace Corps and Internship programs to expand on their education.
