Seek Medical Attention

In case of an emergency: call 9-1-1

Kishwaukee Community Hospital

Kishwaukee Hospital provides free emergency room medical services and evidence collection (i.e. rape kit) to victims of rape or sexual assault. If a victim/survivor chooses to provide health insurance information to the emergency room, the emergency room will bill the insurance company and the policy holder will be notified. However, the victim/survivor is not responsible for deductibles or co-pays for the emergency room visit. If health insurance is not provided, financial assistance may be provided by Kishwaukee Hospital. A Sexual Assault Form is also required to be completed as submitted to the State.

  • The victim is placed in a private room.
  • Medical care is given as soon as possible.
  • A NIU Advocacy Coordinator or Safe Passage Advocate is called based on a victim's preferences.
  • By law, the department of NIU Police & Public Safety and/or the DeKalb Police Department are notified, and the victim may choose to file a criminal report.

Preserve Physical Evidence

Physical evidence may be necessary to prosecute the offender and be helpful in obtaining an order of protection. If at all possible, do not bath, wash your hands, use the restroom, drink, smoke, change clothing, or brush your teeth following an assault.
