Your safety is our top priority and in light of recent events, as well as a Halloween weekend filled with social activities, we wanted to update you about changes taking place this weekend.
First, NIU Police and DeKalb Police will be increasing patrols, both on campus and in the surrounding neighborhoods. As is typical of busy weekends, DeKalb Police also have asked other area police agencies to provide support.
Secondly, the exterior doors of all NIU residence halls will be locked from Friday, 7 p.m., through Halloween, and will be reopened 7 a.m. Wednesday. Residents will be required to swipe or show their OneCard to enter. At all times, please remember that guests must present identification and register before entering.
As discussed at the "Let's Talk Safety" meeting earlier this week, there is much you can do to help ensure your safety, including:
- Should you ever feel unsafe, or observe something you believe dangerous or suspicious, contact police at once - either via 911 or our non-emergency line at 815-753-1212. They will assist you quickly.
- Utilize the Huskie Safe Line and Safe Walk Service for your travels on and around campus.
- Always walk in groups and avoid poorly lit areas.
Finally, we encourage you to subscribe to the NIU Safety Bulletins service. We notify you because we care about your safety. You can find details on how to subscribe HERE.
Have a fun and safe weekend!
