Recycling Programs at NIU

NIU is proud to announce its transition to commingled, also called single-stream, recycling.  
This means any and all of the recyclable items listed below can be placed in any one of our recycling containers around campus. For recycling off campus, please see our Community Resources page.

  • Acceptable
    Plastic bottles labeled with numbers 1 and 2

    Any unsoiled plastic with recycling symbol or RID number 1-7

    Juice Boxes

    6 pk/12 pk rings

  • Not Acceptable
    Styrofoam

    Plastic wrap and packaging

    Plastic bags(can be recycled at local grocery stores)

Metals

  • Acceptable
    Aluminum Foil

    Beverage cans 

    Disposable baking pans
